Voting will take place April 5-24 in-person at all of our library locations and online here at oneread.org . Posted in: 2021 Program Suggested One Read: Caste December 30, 2020 One Read Leave a comment Welcome back for our final suggested title for One Read 2021! Today’s suggestion is Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent by Isabel Wilkerson. This was one of the most nominated books. Wilkerson takes a deep dive, through heavily researched narratives and stories, to show the underlying caste system in the United States cultural structure. From the book, “Caste is insidious and therefore powerful because it is not hatred, it is not necessarily personal. It is the worn grooves of comforting routines and unthinking expectations, patterns of a social order that have been in place for so long that it looks like the natural order of things.” One nominator said that “It is relevant, interesting and very informative.” Another nominator said that it is a “Great read about the history of black community in US, it will generate lots of discussion for our community to deal with racial issues.” And another nominator said, “Racial injustice has been ignored for too long. Let’s talk about this.” And our final nominator said, “This book should be required reading for HS students, college students and all Americans.” Thank you to all of our nominators! And now we wait. Posted in: 2021 Program Filed under: Suggested titles 2021 Suggested One Read: The Paris Hours December 28, 2020 One Read Leave a comment This is one of the last suggested titles we are highlighting for One Read 2021. In January the reading panel will start narrowing down the list. Today’s nominated title is “ The Paris Hours ” by Columbia’s very own Alex George. It tells the story of Proust’s Paris during the Jazz Age, with all of it’s famous inhabitants, but through the lens of four obscure characters who are all searching for something. This book had multiple nominations. One nominator called it a “beautiful story historically set in Paris.” Another nominator said that it was “an excellent work of historical fiction with captivating narratives to the very end.” Our final nominator said that it is “thought provoking plus supports a local author.” Thank you, nominators.
